    Trailer Hitch Electric Outlet

I have a 2017 SEL 4 Motion Tig with the trailer ready system. I installed the VW Hitch and Outlet. I plugged the wiring plug, which was under the bumper, into the Outlet. No power at the Outlet. My question: Does it need a computer dealer download to activate the Outlet or what? Any help would be appreciated.

May need the relay and or fuse plugged in? I think there is a separate relay for the towing kit.

Well I did my research and it does need the Electrical Installation Kit, Part #5N0055204NA, Dealer cost $278.32. After reading the instructions it requires installation of a unit in the left trunk side cover, installation of a jumper wire in the panel left of the steering wheel, and a computer re-flash to accept the tow hitch. Ive made an appointment to have the above mentioned parts installed and re-programmed. Cost was $195.00. All is now good.

    Re: Trailer Hitch Electric Outlet

I am about to have a hitch installed on my 2014 Tig. Using a hitch specialist and not the dealer. Am told they have to pull power separately from the battery and run directly to harness (not part of an existing circuit I guess). Anything I should look out for using this method?
BTW the dealer was not interested in doing the work.
    Thanks!

Pulling power from the battery is for the module that controls the lighting, that goes
to the tow harness, and not the tow harness itself.

There are much cheaper kits out there, plenty of aftermarket ones.

    Check out www.curtmfg.com

I just installed a kit on the Jeep we have. Very simple with oe style plug & play connections.

The kit ( #56358 ) for the Tig does need one fused connection to the battery, but this is not a difficult task.

I was able to find my kit locally and it was a little cheaper than the curt site. Check ebay and amazon too?

Edit: Yep. EBay has them for $65 free shipping.

Oh, yeah, sorry, with an outlet, yeah you will need a 12V to the battery. If you do
not want it HOT all the time, you can install a relay switched with ignition to turn it
off when the car is off. Plus, as said, you would need one for the module anyway,
but you can get that from the inside fuse/relay center.

Just remember if you use these cheap jack kits that don't have the correct VW modules then you're bypassing all the brilliant VW technology to make towing safer !! For me I bought a Tig because its technology is the best not because it's cheapest and I wouldn't ruin that by putting an elcheapo tow package on it !! Just my 2c worth

    Re: Trailer Hitch Electric Outlet

I spoke to our local dealer yesterday. The wiring and plug is $400 plus tax plus 3 hours of shop labour!!

Wow $700+ just to wire the trailer!!!

    There must be an alternative?????

    Re: Trailer Hitch Electric Outlet

Sorry...also found out that European models pull twice the weight because they use a full frame hitch system vs the regular Curt bumper hitch.

Are these available in North America?? Don't want to haul more weight just ant the security of a proper hitch on the highway.
