I have the 1981 Rabbit Pickup 1.6 diesel w/4 speed and need to do some engine work. I also have a change to buy a 1992 1.8 turbo diesel w 5 speed Jetta for a really good price that runs good. How hard a conversion? Is it a near bolt in or is there a lot of fabrication work to be done? It would be nice to have the extra power if it is an easy exchange.
I would say that you would probably need the entire electrical harness and fuse box, as I imagine there are a few upgrades to the electrics than the older rabbit diesel, what they might be I wouldn't even have a clue.
I suggest that you buy a Haynes for the year the car is because I didn't think that a 1.8TDI existed on that model year.
VW never made a 1.8 diesel. Here's mine with a 1.9 TD from a 1995 Passat. The swap is a simple bolt-in.
