Briano's MK1 VW Rabbit DIY Repairs

As I found out tonight this forum limits the Img files and or Text that one can associate with a given thread to 16 images and 100000 characters which isn't a bad thing. It is just that some of mine Exceed that amount by a small bit.

For those that don't know me on this forum well enough, I have owned and repaired Diesel Rabbits and Cabbies since 1981, and bought my first real car when I was 13. I have worked on Old MG's Sprites, and Rovers as well as on various other motors and engines as well. I have written a few how-to's that while not fully a older mk1 designed are for mk1 frames, and for Cabriolets. As I don't really want to post 4 and 5 and 6 part threads, I have created a post where all my how to's are. While some of you are old school, there may be a few newbies that will find the information helpful.

I have included at no additional Charge my most popular how-to which gets improved with every top I install.... running total is 8...

All good stuff, and only time will tell when I get through these, since I do.

Two things...on the lubing of your top frame I see the picture, but am I missing what you use for lube...lithium white grease, 3-n-1 oil? Also, I hear that the vinyle tops need a conditioner so that the typical spots where the top will crack due to being folded up may occur, is there a brand or clue as to what to do to treat the top to keep it from wear-n-tear? Secondly the link to the fixing leaky tops has no info on the MK1's sight.

BTW for anyone into MK1's in general, the neoBently on the MK1Dubs sight is uberkewl.

My winter project 92 Cabby) is to shore up the suspension and steering. Issues: seems like it has neg camber in front along with bushings are all oval shaped. And the shifting has some QT time coming to it with new bushings and short shifter. Then onto lowering it, slightly, nothing radical. Thinking I may go with Billistein's and sport springs in lieu of cupkit since I do plan on dropping in a "heavier" motor later on.

Maybe next winter will be the 16V ABA swap. And going rat stylez in preperation for the following year.

Then the third winter will be the body and rims.

The missing url was there a week ago, but as I understand it, they are being moved to a new server, and that link isn't active yet. Unfortunately that was the only location I ever posted that information.

I am one of the original members of the MK1dubs, and to say that, is well an understatement.

They have just opened it to the MK1 crowd whole hog.

I'm not so much on the MK1 sight since there seems to be very little activity. But it is an awesome forum. And I was pleased as punch to see Lucky and Ugly Bastid tie'ng the knot

Updated the Link to the leaky top how-to, and included the couple of new ones that I did.

One for modifying the Radiator Shroud to make it easier to install and remove.
One for the a/c cut out switch so you don't have to run the compressor when wanting heated defrost...

...would you know of a DIY for replacing the tie-rods (not just the ends). My inner tie-rods are loose where the attach to the steering rack. I was going to DIY my progress if there isn't one out there to refer to for my own sanity.

So far I believe the removal of the steering rack is the best course of action, but if I'm already on my back catching rust in the eyes, can't I just replace the whole t-rods. It would probably benefit the car to yank out the rack and replace the PS fluid, but I want to enjoy it this summer.

Didn't catch this earlier (so sorry).....

There is a inner tie-rod tool that you can rent from autozone and the like, but they are only 50 bucks at harbor freight.

    Remove the outer rod.

The tool slides over the inner rod, you place the wrench part in it and using a pipe wrench or bar as some have a steel bar you can use to un tighten them it is a piece of cake to do the inners and you don't have to remove the rack off the car.

Removing the rack is a major PAIN IN THE arse as you have to drop the down pipe, and removing the tranny make a whole lot more room.

There isn't a DIY that I know of for the inners
