Hi. I just bought a 1993 Cabriolet Collector's Edition. The car runs good but it needs lot's of tlc. I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of a good place top buy parts to fix this car up. I need parts such as the heater/ac cluster, automatic transmission shift handle, stuff like that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1972 standard beetle. Left side front and back flashers don't work. The 4 ways work so all the turn lights turn on when the emergency switch is on, the front and rear right flashers work when turning the signal, the flasher indicator bulb works. What is my problem? God help me, I've been staring at wiring diagrams forever trying to figure it out. I found 5 grounds, 2 under the hood, left and right, cleaned them out, as well as 2 under the back seat, driver side and one on the driver side in the engine compartment. I love this car more then anything and would really like to drive it safely. Thank you. -Katherine

Completely noob question here. Been having alternator problems with my '82 Rabbit (1.7L, gas), so I'm following your advice to replace the grounds from battery to frame and frame to engine, but I don't know which ones to get. There are so many options on Rockauto.com/O'Reilly's/Autozone and I don't want to get the wrong one. Could you send a link to what I should buy?

I also don't know which alternator to get if I need a replacement. My Rabbit HAD A/C. It isn't hooked up anymore, but I think I'm supposed to get the replacement alt that is w/AC.

Hi there. My name is Gabe and I am brand new to the forum. I noticed your posts and really appreciate your feedback. I inherited a 1981 Rabbit Diesel with the 1.6 n/a engine. A few days ago I replaced the fuel injector pump, timing belt, fuel injectors, glow plugs, valve cover gasket etc. I timed everything up perfectly. Being a diesel, it has always vibrated at idle. But I think it's gotten worse, so I purchased the 4 mounts for the engine/tranny. The Bentley manual is not very clear on how to tackle it. I noticed an old thread you posted but it doesn't work anymore. Would you please help me out. Are there any tips you can help me out with due to your experience? I really appreciate your help --- Gabe =)

I saw that you help a lot of people and I was just hoping for your two cents.
    My Volkswagen starts then dies
The engine starts then dies right away. It is not a vacuum leak. It has something to do with the key switch it will start, and if you hold the key on start engaging the starter it will stay running, but as soon as you put it in run position the car will die. If the key is on the run position the radio will not work and neither will the heater. I think it has something to do with the wiring. I have replaced the key switch and relay in the fuse panel. Any help for the night would be greatly appreciated. If you would like or think it would help diagnose the problem I could make a video. Also I cleaned the grounds on the chassis in the engine compartment, but was wondering if there are anymore grounds that could be causing my issue. Thanks

hey i did my head gasket and made the mistake of not putting it in top dead center before removing the belt, i made the marks on the ip gear and camshaft gears as to where the belt goes back on, i havnt cranked the engine over at all, is it okay to slide the belt on exactly where i took it off and try turning the engine, it slipped a gear on the bottom gear so i have to pull the lower timing belt cover off to get it back in the right spot, any tips?

Quick question!! I see that you comment/help a lot of people on this forum. I have an 82 Rabbit.. use to be fuel injection (factory) but is converted to a holley carb... My problem is that i can not get any spark what so ever... Now to give you an idea of what Ive done so far - I replaced computer, coil, and complete distributor (halls sending unit) and still have nothing.. I have checked all the wires to each of those components and that came back ok. I see you "start with grounds" so i cleaned the 2 leading to battery off neg post (trans & body).. and the one off the wiring coming in question to the head... im really lost here.. and to give a kicker I can put a plug connected to the wire off the coil.. and turn the key on and get a spark.. and turn key off get a spark.. but nothing during turning it over.. any insight would be greatly appreciated ..

ive been reading a ton on doing the shift linkage from 4 to speed speeds, it says to undo the clamp and pull out the splined rod, and put a battery 15mm between the stop plate under the shift lever and then put the splined rod back in and tighten the clamp. i also read that the slector lever with the ball on the end is 6mm longer on the 5 speed tranny, the 4 speed one is 24mm and the 5 speed is 30mm long, is it worth tracking one down or should i just try adjusting it first?

Thanks Brian and thanks for the insight ! I was leaning toward the idea something else was the cause of the rotor failure. It fired immediately after the rotor was replaced AND doing a static timing. The rotor was not aligned with the indexing mark on the distributor housing. Turned the housing and it was fixed.

I'll suggest he replace plugs and wires with OEM parts. I got it running last Thursday and told him to bring it to my house so I could set the timing with a light. I haven't seen him since. He's in his early 20's and is permanently attached to the new umbilical cord - the cell phone.

I was leaning toward the idea that I was having a wierd and twisted flashback to the 60's.
55 years in the trade and I've never encountered a rotor that had burned through to the distributor shaft.

thanks again Brian! my flywheel was not installed properly by the PO. i rolled the 1st cylinder to TDC using a long zip tie to let me know when it was at the top, then aligned the bottom end, the distributor and the cam as well. it runs better than it ever has before, and with the extra kick to 6* BTDC, it will climb through the rev's!! thank you very much for your quick response and help with links as well as your own advice. CHeers!

Hey im new here. I drive a 1981 vw rabbit, fuel injected, convertible, five speed. Im new to the whole VW scene as i tend to work more on scion toyota lexus, and honda. I guess my questions are how can i put an aftermarket stereo in my rabbit as i have found no install kits for a car this old. i was thinking of taking the old stereo out and cutting a new whole to sit the new stereo in. Also is my rabbit an mk1?

Chip, the best thing is to buy them at a local car parts store, and then place them on the car You will need a 20 inch battery cable then a 16 inch bonding wire to go from the frame to the tranny.

For the Poof of white, I would look at the car when running to see if your hoses are over pressuring, that you can't squeeze them a bit when they are hot. As Crappy running white smoke is usually a blown head gasket.

Start a new thread, and you will get a bunch of helpful folks assisting you.

The fact that you can't start means that you need to replace grounds and charge the battery, then verify that your timing is still spot on.

Then we can go from there.

Hey Brian, I would like to ask you a few questions if you have the time :)

I have recently purchased a 84 VW rabbit convertible wolfsburg edition.

Purchased him and during the 20 mile drive home about 10 miles shifted into 5 gear when i noticed large puff of white smoke behind me then he started acting like out gas, stalled at a light and when I tried to start nothing happened. No noise, no clicking, no humming, no thumping he just sat there.

I know that the alt, starter, and battery were replaced in may of last year, the receipts were provided at time of sale.

I took the battery to local advance and they stated the battery was drained but had volts?? So they said they would charge it up.

I plan to replace the grounds- battery to frame then frame to engine or v.s. I will verify correct order. Where is the best place to purchase and what gauge?

Can you direct me where to start first to help determine what the problem might be.
