Are there owners who do light service to their own cars, for example changing the oil and filter? Does it invalidate the warranty in any way? I drive a 2011 Jetta TDI.

Yup. Just follow the recommended services in your manual. When I say follow the recommended intervals I mean stick to them like GLUE or you run the risk of damage to components. Luckily you have Free maintenance if you live in USA until 30k miles. Otherwise use the correct oil and change your filters on time.

There are plenty of people here who do their own maintenance work. Changing your own oil and filter will not void your warranty as long as you use the oil recommended by VW for your engine. The only time you can void your warranty is if something is modified on the car that leads to a failure of something on the car.

find this in your manual, not all synthetic oils are the same. This will be written on the actual container. it is not a synthetic blend either...

welcome to the VWOC and enjoy your stay...

Jetta TDI requires a HIGHER spec oil. 507 spec or HIGHER. Anything lower WILL cause damage to the cat or other parts.
