Hi everybody,

I'm gonna jump right into the issue.
The engine began to have starting issues a few days ago, once in a while it will crank but it would take a long time to start, about 10-15 sec. Then everything got back to normal and I figured it must be something in the fuel since the thank was almost empty.

Yesterday morning everything was fine, I went to work and when I tried to get back home, it wouldn't start at all. It cranks but does not fire.

The fuses are all fine so it either doesn't have a spark or it does not have fuel. I'll pull out the spark plugs later to see if there is any problems with that, but for the fuel pump I have no idea where to look.

Where is the fuel pump in a 1994 2l gasoline Golf ?

Thanks a lot.

Hey man, look under the carpet just behind the rear seat on the passenger side. You should find a plate that is bolted to the floor, and your fuel pump should be just below this. A quick test sometimes is to take a hammer and bump the bottom of the tank, give it a whack but don't try to cave it in. If the car cranks after this then definitely replace the pump, but if it doesn't it still don't rule the pump out.

Another place to look if you are getting fuel and fire may be the cam sensor. This sensor simply tell the computer when the engine reaches TDC #1 piston and starts the firing order. If this sensor is bad the car will have the same exact symptoms you have described.

Thanks for the advice, I'm getting closer to the cam sensor.

The fuel pump was fine, the car started after I've replaced the coil.
But that could also be a coincidence, because after two weeks it did it again. The exact same way, except it started the next day as if nothing happened.
It's been another two weeks since then and it's running fine.

I'll keep an eye for the cam sensor, maybe buy a second hand one while I can still drive to a junkyard :)

Thanks!
