: iOS vs Android: Your thoughts.
hellrbbt 08-13-2010, 08:37 PM I'm in the market for a smartphone. I had an iPhone last summer through my old internship and loved it. I have an iPod Touch and use it more as a PDA than anything else. While my standard flip phone does a decent job at being a phone and texting, I would like to consolidate the two into one device.
I'm leaning towards the iPhone due to experience, but now with Googles Android making a scene, I'm starting to wonder which way would pull me more. I would like to say I am pretty educated on the miscellaneous features and ups/downs of both OS's, but I would like some user inputs from anyone who has used both, but in particular an Android based phone as I have not had a ton of time using one.
Yes, there is Windows Mobile, but having worked with phones using this OS (or at least an older version of it), I'm more inclined to go with the other two.
So with that, I would appreciate any and all input! Thanks guys! :)
i'm dual booting winmob 6.5 & droid froyo (beta on my device). i like them both. windows runs my gps mapping application of choice right now.
hardware keyboards will always win me over though...
goofygreek 08-13-2010, 09:58 PM first of all, whos your service provider. if you have att, then your fine. also, either verison or sprint, or maybe both, will be getting the iphone. most likely will be announced in January. Apple IS developing the iphone with a cdma chip, its in the verification process right now. So i dont want to here people going, oh thats just a rumor. Not what this thread is about. Second, wait till around december to get the iphone with att since thats when they will have the revised version of the iphone without antenna issues. third, just depends on what your feel more comfortable using. a lot of people who have andriod phones have themes that make there phones look like iphones. I honestly think the user interface on the iphone is the most friendly. But android definitely is becoming a lot easier to use. androids widgets are pretty neat as well, and it seems that a lot of andriod phones are just faster and longer battery life than the iphone4. in my opinion, the driod x kicks a$$ and is a huge competitor to the iphone since its faster, bigger screen, and has a longer battery life. so thats my little rant. get what you want. not what everyone else wants.
gofetch06 08-13-2010, 11:24 PM gahhhh. i can't make up my mind now.
and then there are those that put android on their iphone...
hellrbbt 08-14-2010, 12:35 AM I am currently on US Cellular (CDMA), but I am willing, and looking to switch as necessary. Currently the only Android phone they offer is the Samsung Acclaim, which has been getting slightly above lackluster reviews primarily due to the keyboard. After messing around with it in the store for about 20mins (and having the sales people get edgy for me just saying "no, I'm just browsing" lol) I feel that I slightly agree, it isn't the greatest of phones/keyboard. As for the iPhone on CDMA, yes, I know of this. I'm not looking for what everyone else wants, but rather their personal experience.
android hands down, after using nexus one and iphone 3gs, nexus one blows iphone outta the water
hellrbbt 08-14-2010, 08:32 AM android hands down, after using nexus one and iphone 3gs, nexus one blows iphone outta the water
Any particular reason why?
everything iphone does, nexus one did it better.
especially itunes, you could use doubletwist to manage music on nexus one with your itunes library, and yet you dont have to be binded with one unique itunes library
goofygreek 08-14-2010, 12:17 PM and then there are those that put android on their iphone...
as far as i know, that only works on the original iphone. which i was trying to find one so i can do that too, lol.
bubrando 08-14-2010, 01:30 PM i'm still using the G1 (HTC Dream) and i love it. as far as competition with the iphone goes it's only competitive against the first one. everybody i chill with has an iphone so i've played with the different generations, and i have to say, the iPhone 4 is almost perfect. i used to sell phones at radio***** and it's the best feeling phone i've ever played with, nothing's really come close. as far as the operating systems go i love android, my one complaint is that the quality of the apps isn't always the best since it's open market.
nitroscope8 08-14-2010, 02:50 PM Android FTW. My Verizon contract was up and I was trying to decide on a new phone. I REAAAAAAAALY wanted an iphone but I hate ATT...mostly for the fact it doesn't get service where I frequent the most. I still really wanted the iphone but then I was offered the HTC Eris. While this may be the baby droid, it does everything the iphone can do, does it better, and can do everything else. It's almost like a tiny computer. This phone is simply amazing. AAAAND, it cost me 30 bux for the phone when I renewed my contract. Hell of a lot cheaper than the iphone. Oh yeah, I can buy batteries for it too.
hellrbbt 08-14-2010, 05:16 PM Here in WI the main providers I would have to go with are US Cellular, Verizon, AT&T/Cingular, or T-Mobile. Sprint is here, but they do not offer the best coverage in the rural areas, in particular at my parents cabin.
I definitely hear you guys on going Android though, but I do want to also use it as a dedicated music player too, which strongly swings me to the iPhone.
Keep 'em coming! I really appreciate your thoughts and experience.
seanmcd 08-14-2010, 07:47 PM Make sure the carrier you choose is good in your area first off.
I always say if you like to tweak/customize (hack) your phones - go with Android. If you don't care and just want to make calls and surf and txt, get the iPhone. iPhone is nice. I use Mac's at home but I prefer Android on my phone. Currently using the HTC Incredible and loving it.

nexus one has great multimedia player as well, and if the stock one doesn't suit you, go on android market and find yourself anotherone

Yea, that is how I narrowed down my carrier choices. The only dilemma I face is that I finish grad school in either December '11 or May '12, and hope to relocate to an different part of the country. But that shouldn't be too much of an issue now.
As for tweaking, you make a good point. Having never really messed with tweaking a phone, I just don't see a need for it. I have a couple VPN settings on my iPod touch that I use sparingly, but that is about as 'tweaky' as I got. Now for computers and my car, totally different story, lol. So I guess in that aspect I am again leaning toward the iPhone. I guess that is really starting to look like my direction, but the more I read up on the Android OS, the more I really want to try it out...
xkaterpatater 08-15-2010, 11:58 AM A little history:
Nokia 3560
Nokia 3569
Nokia 6101
Samsung t809
Sidekick 3
Razor v3
Tmobile Dash (windows)
Blackberry Pearl 8100
Blackberry Curve 8320
G1 (android)
Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220
Blackberry Curve 8900
MyTouch (android)
HTC HD2 (windows 6.5)
All on T-Mobile
A week ago I switched to AT&T and bought the iPhone4.. Have never been happier.
With the fact that T-Mobile sucks aside.. I was not happy with android. Something about it just doesn't feel polished to me.
Windows 6.5 is a joke. There ARE some apps but to me they seemed outdated and you really had to search for them.
I was looking at the evo and at the droid x when I was going to switch, but went with AT&T because of sprints lack of service and because I felt like the iPhone was something I'd probably be more willing to keep for a longer period of time as it's more "polished".
I haven't had a single antenna issue- but I do have a case on it.. So there's a possibility that with out the case I would. I've never had to restart it, and haven't had any app crash.
On android each time I tried it I was doing battery pulls almost everyday. Could be the phone, could have been the apps.. But I like things running smoothly and that's what I'm getting from the iPhone 4.
I think it's all user preference. If you want something with endless options then go with android, if you want something that you have to put a lot of time into (but can mold it into everything you want) then windows 6.5.. If you want apples comfort then iPhone 4.

I think that sums it up perfectly. The iPhone 4 and iOS 4 is an incredibly polished package, and you can still tweak it to your liking if you are willing to jailbreak (though at the moment the latest version of iOS 4 hasn't been broken yet). Android is getting to the point of being almost as polished as iOS, but in my opinion, still has a little ways to go, especially when it comes to the marketplace. Windows Mobile (6.5 and earlier) is just plain behind the times and isn't even in the same league as Android and iOS. Blackberry is still a great business phone, but for everyday, casual use, they have a long ways to go to compete with Apple and Google. And Symbian is badly in need of a refresh to compete (or to simply be replaced by MeeGo, which looks quite promising).
If you can wait a few months you may want to consider looking at a Windows 7 Phone as another option to Android and iOS. From everything I've seen and read about it so far, Microsoft may be a serious player in the smartphone market again with the release of Windows Phone 7. The interface is fresh and unique and looks extremely user friendly, the marketplace (assuming they corral enough developers to support it) should offer quite a few 3rd party apps, and the integration of all the Zune media features should make for a very, very nice package.
xfourevertruex 08-15-2010, 02:37 PM I'm a former iPhone user now on Android with an HTC incredible (to hold me over until my droid x comes in). I am a MAJOR fan of the Android OS.
I definitely agree with all above. the iPhone interface is super clean and easy to use..but without jailbreaking you just don't have the same ridiculous amounts of functionality that you get with Android.
hellrbbt 08-15-2010, 06:28 PM Excellent, all these posts are exactly what I was looking for. I'm heavily leaning toward the iPhone now (as I kind of was), but won't make a final decision until all this moving stuff settles, my school loans come in, and all the utility bills are fully figured out.
i know i said i like hardware keyboards, but "swype" looks to be a pretty promising feature to have on any touch screen device...
gofetch06 08-15-2010, 08:43 PM swype intrigues me.
with all the chicken-peck typist in the world. i wouldn't be surprised to see usb keyboards that are just touch screens themselves, specifically made for swype usage. even notebooks/netbooks will have inlaid "screenboards" <(that's what i would call them) for swype input or normal chicken-pecking...
i'm not looking to get rich off of this idea, so anyone, feel free to run with it. you only need a few grand to get the idea patented correctly. it may already be out there, if so, i can't wait to see them hit the market.
xfourevertruex 08-15-2010, 10:01 PM swype is pretty cool. there are several apps already available in the market that let you use it. my boss lives by it now.
xkaterpatater 08-16-2010, 12:23 AM Swype came on my windows 6.5 HD2. Awesome program.. I probably would have gotten rid of the phone with in trial period had sywpe not existed. Before that, I used shapewriter on Android.
Makes life a lot easier.. Though I think texting is way too easy on the regular iPhone keyboard for some reason..
BIGGREEK 08-16-2010, 12:41 AM eh i hate apple anything, and im not spending 200 bucks for a phone that I dont want and on an upgrade i dont have... Palm FTW :p
goofygreek 08-18-2010, 10:02 AM I think that sums it up perfectly. The iPhone 4 and iOS 4 is an incredibly polished package, and you can still tweak it to your liking if you are willing to jailbreak (though at the moment the latest version of iOS 4 hasn't been broken yet).
iOS 4 is jailbreakable. Just use jailbreakme.com. works perfectly. You cannot however jailbreak iOS 4.0.2, which is just a jailbreak patch, nothing more. well a jailbreak patch and a MAJOR security fix that a hacker found and fixed before apple did.
djwhiplash2001 08-18-2010, 10:25 AM Kate, did you ever use Android beyond 1.6? With modern hardware and the latest OS updates, Android is fairly flawless.
Also, I hope this addresses your question as to which OS I run, no matter what device:

:D
I used my iPod Touch the same way you do. Swore I'd never be without it. Then I got my Droid, and the iPod was just a distant memory.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go back to playing FF9 on my full-fledged PSX emulator, after checking out some websites with flash.

LOL, nice. I wouldn't mind trying it, but I don't want to do it on my one and only iPod touch, I'd hate to loose all my notes and calendars.
djwhiplash2001 08-18-2010, 01:41 PM Mine dual boots
xkaterpatater 08-18-2010, 01:42 PM Kate, did you ever use Android beyond 1.6? With modern hardware and the latest OS updates, Android is fairly flawless.
The only android phone I'd be willing to try is the Evo and Sprint is no bueno, so no thanks!
Ken Clean-Air System 08-18-2010, 06:45 PM iOS 4 is jailbreakable. Just use jailbreakme.com. works perfectly. You cannot however jailbreak iOS 4.0.2, which is just a jailbreak patch, nothing more. well a jailbreak patch and a MAJOR security fix that a hacker found and fixed before apple did.
Well yeah, 4.0.2 is what I was talking about ... no jailbreak available for that yet. My old iPhone 3G, which I use as an iPod now is jailbroken running iOS 4 (though I used redsn0w to jailbreak it, not jailbreakme.com). I usually upgrade to the latest software version when Apple releases one, though the last two patches have been garbage (each only 'fixing' one thing). However, many times Apple's firmware updates include new functionality that is worth having, so I'll generally update and then wait for the jailbreak for the latest firmware ... which usually doesn't take long.
If Samsung's Galaxy S phone for AT&T would have been available when I upgraded to my iPhone 4 I may have considered it instead of the new iPhone. To be honest, though, I have enough paid apps on my iPhone that I probably still would have stayed with the iPhone just so the money I've spent in the App Store wasn't wasted. My next upgrade may well be to Android, or possibly even Windows Phone 7 depending how things play out in the next year or so.
hellrbbt 08-29-2010, 05:33 PM Looks like the HTC Desire just came out on US Cellular. Looks like I have to visit the store to see what this phone is like. Pretty much all reviews I have found on it online are great...
hellrbbt 09-22-2010, 06:47 PM Sooo.... I just got the HTC Desire. Not too bad so far. It's only been about an hour though. lol
