: Running APR 93 Octane Chip on 87
marknouj 06-01-2010, 12:24 PM Hi Everybody,
I'm having the APR 93 octane chip installed later today on my 2.5 Rabbit, but I still have 1/2 tank of 87 octane gas in the tank.
Is it OK to run the car with the 87 octane for this time before I fill with 93?
Thanks,
Mark
djwhiplash2001 06-01-2010, 12:56 PM I'd say no - go drive your car until it's close to empty.
redrabbit07 06-01-2010, 01:09 PM i talked to chris from c2 about this, he said the car will run on 87. but its a terrible idea. 89/91 are as low as u can go.
beat the hell out of it for a bit and fill it the rest of the way w 93 before you get flashed.
Russki 06-01-2010, 02:43 PM or buy a bottle of octane booster at any gas station for like 5$, and put it in ur tank. That should do the trick

not at all, that stuff doesn't do anything. there have been numerous tests done to prove it, it bumps it up like 1/2 an octane point. dont waste your money on it.
Russki 06-01-2010, 02:58 PM The Cobra Octane boost, its like 10 bucks - its the non conventional octane booster (boasts octane boost to like 103). put the whole bottle in, mixed with half a tank will atleast bring it up to 91 from 87, and that all he really needs.
Dont get me wrong, either way - if i didnt wanna spend the money id just go drive a mountain road in second gear for an hour lol
redrabbit07 06-01-2010, 03:14 PM i understand that it says it can do that but research it, all that stuff is a joke. best bet is to get down to 1/4 tank and fill up with 93. you could fill it up from 1/2 and end up with 89 (since all 89 is is a mix of 93/87) but the closer you are to 93 the better. chris from c2 made it clear that running 87 on a 93 tune is not a good thing, not worth the risks.
BIGGREEK 06-01-2010, 03:19 PM yea it will start to fire before its supposed to (aka detonating) and it eats plugs like a mo and it pings like crazy
when i went and got my 91 apr chip, i had half tank of 87, i went and fill up the rest to 94, that seems to do the trick, but for you... empty the tank, 87 is no good,
marknouj 06-01-2010, 03:57 PM Are there any risks/drawbacks with using the chip?
What are the most vulnerable parts of the engine after installation?
kiserhd 06-01-2010, 04:28 PM Fuel Economy is probably the only drawback. Mainly due to the driver.
Most of the tunes increase throttle response, reduced/removed decel. lag etc. Mess around a bit with the timing to pull a bit more power from higher octane fuels.
If you run a lower octane than the car is programmed for you run the risk or predetonation like previously stated.
DonJuan1Jr 06-01-2010, 05:14 PM pinging?
detonation or knocking, same thing as pinging.
DigitalPirate 06-02-2010, 12:39 AM If you are so worried, just get the full ECU with the program switching technology. Get flashed and finish your tank of 87 octane, go to the gas station.. fill up with 93 and switch programs. No problems.
marknouj 06-02-2010, 12:00 PM I got the 40k tune up yesterday ($500), ran the gas down past the gas light to use up the fuel injector cleaner they put in (definitely made a difference, it seems my injectors were clogged). Then today, I got the APR 93 octane single program ($350).
What can I say, but WOW. What a difference! Finally no more rev hang, they upped the rev limiter to 6500 so now redlining is a breeze. The engine just feels more free to do what it wants.
Last year I installed the BSH Billet Pendulum Mount and although it did improve the rigidity of the engine relative to the car, a rough and high vibration idle was a side effect. Over time this reduced, but never went away. Since the APR Chip increases the engine idle RPM to 750, it is SOOOOOO smooth now.
The power increase is noticeable, definitely more torque than HP increase. The engine sound a little rougher, not in a bad way - more of an engine confidence or arrogance, less shy. I don't know how to explain it.
Bottom Line - AWESOME
redrabbit07 06-02-2010, 12:04 PM awesome glad you like it!
mikebbugn 06-09-2010, 05:03 AM I had the full software flash from APR done on monday. Feels much more responsive & seems to accelerate much better. :) i love the anti-theft feature!! i also had about half a tank of 89 when i had it flashed, i drove about 20 miles before i filled the rest of the tank with 93. no issues.
Chad Oner 06-09-2010, 12:13 PM hmmm, I didnt know you can get chipped to run higher octane. I should probably do this...where can you get it done your dealership?
some dealer do, some dont, best bet check out authorized retailer at goapr.com
