New here. Thanks for this site.

My 2001 Beetle starts from a stop in high gear. It won't down shift. I don't know how this happened it just did it one day.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can check?

Thanks again...

It's starting in 3rd gear...it's in limp home mode. You need a tool to scan the transmission module for codes. There are various sensors that can cause this so we need to determine which one is faulty. G68 is an internal speed sensor...its under the transmission mount, and there is a range switch. its a big yellowish boxy switch on the back of the trans on the driver side. There are others, but these two can cause this issue.

Ok thanks. So I guess a dealer is the only one that can do this?

Funny thing is I had the car at a dealer for ignition coil replacement. I noticed this while driving home after I picked up the car. I called the dealer to see if they could have done something to cause this and they denied. :( They weren't helpful at all.

The car has a 1.8T with 75,000 miles on it.

Thanks for your help.

Im' assuming you have the 4 speed auto, right? Gear shifter goes D321? If so it's the AG4 transmission. That trans can do some funky things. HaVe someone local with vag com scan it and see what malfunctions are in 01 engine and 02 transmission. It will save you money and post back the results.

Yes 4 speed.

I will address it today and let you know what I find.

Found out today that engine codes could cause this. I had ignition coils replaced a week ago. They did not erase the codes. Just went down and had them erased. The car now shifts normal. But, now it idles really rough. :o:o

I am going to check the coils again.

Well now another problem. As I was checking coils by removing them one at a time while the engine was running, one of the four wires on the connector that attaches to the coil shorted. It had a small crack in the insulation. It touch ground and the engine immediately shut down. now it won't start at all.

Any ideas? I am going to check fuses but doubt that will be it.

Thanks

yes, it's a fuse. A common 20 amp controls the coils.

You need to check coes in the trans module, not just engine. The trans module will have faults for something.

Thanks. Is that fuse located with all the others on the side of the dash?

If it isn't, then its ontop of the battery.

Car is running great now. :drive:Found a 15 amp fuse blown. replaced it for the coil. found a faulty plug that must have failed. replaced it drove 20 miles and it runs great. The tranny worked after the engine codes were deleted.

Thanks for your help...
