: Changing spark plugs in '01 Jetta

Hey all.

I've got a 2001 Jetta GLS, with the 2.0 engine. I got one of those computer error alerts on a recent trip. The (out of town) mechanic says the error code was for "intermittent spark" in cylinder #3, possibly the ignition coil.

But I like to start out small. I've had the plugs changed out once (or twice, can't remember....... the dealer did it when it was in the shop for something else). The car has around 105K miles.

However, this time I want to do it myself and save some coin. I've got #1 and #4 swapped out, including the wires, but #2 and #3 are really difficult to get to.

Here's the question: What's the easiest way to access those two plugs? Am I going to have to dismantle that whole exhaust manifold thingy up top?

I did a search, but didn't find anything related to this model. TIA.

Get a long pair of plyers and remove the wire boots. Then get a long extension and your spark plug socket and put it in there. It's quite easy actually. You need an ignition coil. Actually, instead of being on a budget here, you need to spend more money. You need OEM plugs (aftermarket plugs dont run well in this engine. VERY poor driveability and bad mileage, also misfires are common with NON oem plugs ) wires, and ignition coil. Cough up the doh and you won't have ignition problems for a long time. Don't forget about timing belt service with water pump.

Aqua , what did you end up doing? I have a 2002 and have encountered the same access challenge. I can’t see how to get to the #2 and #3 boots or plugs without removing the intake manifold. Nitroscope 8 replied that you need a long extension, which you need for all four. But I can’t see any way to get at either #2 or #3 without either removing the intake manifold or buying some type of special tool. How do VW mechanics do this seemingly simple job?

I'm a vw mechanic and it is simple. I use a 12 inch 3/8 extension with spark plug socket. It fits perfectly over the plug on 2 and 3. The extension rests right on the fuel rail and you might have to push slightly on the rail to make it line up perfectly.
