I went to the dealership today and looked at a couple rabbits. The dealer said the 2008 model had the on the fly MPG readout while the 2007 did not. I did notice the 2007 had the split screen readout whereas the 2008 has the full digital one screen. Just wanted to confirm that she had her info correct cause it seemed like she had no idea what she was talking about.

It depends on whether it has the MFD or not. To my understanding, not all of them came with it. I could be wrong but I think the some of the automatics came with them and the manuals didnt. Someone else here can probably give you a better answer but I do know the the difference is likely whether or not the car is MFD equipped.

it's like Brojan said. I have a 2008 manual with no MFD. So I don't get the mpg read out and all that fancy stuff. I wish I could, but my salesman told me that he had only seen them on the automatics that came through the dealer and never on any manuals.

If you go with a manual, they make aftermarket plug and play devices that will read out all that info and more. they cost around $200-$300 i believe and sit on your dash like a satellite radio module. A few people on here have had them... I think DJ maybe? and I know HIBB did.

I have a 2008 with a manual transmission and it came with the MFD. Very useful!

Mine is an 08 auto and didn't come with. Is this feature with the 4 door models only?

my 07 4 door didn't come with it. I use a scangauge II to give me live mpg, advanced trip functions, and tons of other reading along with viewing and clearing codes. I tuck it right on top of my steering column.

I have an 08 Rabbit Auto Tiptronic and no MFD. One I looked at, at a non-VW dealer, had it but interestingly enough only had "2.5" on the hatch and no Rabbit Symbol. Mine has the Rabbit and "2.5" but no MFD. What gives?

And I like that set up with the ScanGauge. Wish I knew how to install one in mine. Is it easily done and could somebody walk me through it. I just researched them and i'm very interested in one!

I think it just plugs in....seems easy enough....anybody know if these things ever go on sale?

I think the MFD is installed on all model year 2008.5 and newer cars. My '08 5spd has one.

Nope....I've seen an 09 Auto and Manual both and neither had the MFD! I honestly think it was a factory joke to get people to fight over them. They arbitrarily threw one in here and there, grinning the whole time!

I've seen more Rabbits without them then with them. But like others said it seems that it's completely random at how many came with them.

I'm guessing they would run out of the split screen version at the factory ocaisonaly and instead of halting the line they just gave a free *upgrade*.

Well I picked up a Scangauge II off eBay for 100 bucks. Not that I could afford it but i've always wanted one and hey...you can't beat 40% off retail price. There is a guy selling them for 135.00 buy it now or best offer. I offered 75.00 and no dice and then 100.00 and he took it. So if you've been looking to get one, I would go there first!

How did you run the cabling for your Scangauge? Do you think you could post a picture from underneath the steering column showing me how you ran the wiring?

thanks for the tip, i might go pick one up. i've always wanted a G-Tech but they're ridiculously expensive and ugly as all else. are Scangauge's typically reliable?

I think they are considered relatively reliable. I just got mine in the mail and i'm going outside to put it in right now.

let me know how it works for you and how the wiring goes.

It depends on when it was built. They ran out of the Rabbit gauge clusters and just used Jetta ones (that have full MFD) instead. That's what I heard, at least. Mine was an 08 2-door manual with MFD.

The wiring was easy. It just plugs into your OBDII port under the dash. I used the ties from the box and rolled the extra wire and stuffed it under the steering column. I also mounted it in the same place as the other guy (in his photo), but i'm short and can't see everything without leaning forward so I need to increase the Velcro thickness to raise it up some. I think it'll be fun to have, albeit I don't know how useful (i'm just a nerd), but i'm concerned about somebody smashing my window to take it out.

That certainly seems plausible...since the Jetta and Rabbit share many things!

thanks for posting it up. before buying it i want to know how well it's going to work out, is it true that it can read your horsepower figures at the crank?

Jethro1984
06-08-2010, 03:43 AM
Yes (on the horsepower)...the coding is available on the XGauge part of the ScanGauge website.

I presently use my Gauges portion and coded (using the built in codes only, nothing involving vehicle specific coding) to have my Miles To Empty (which I named MtE), and Fuel Used (FUd). I'm also using an average MPG (but I haven't figured out yet if it's tank average or trip average), that was already programmed as a gauge (I may need to change it up); and I have the Manifold Absolute Pressure (also already programmed as a gauge), which just seems like a cool number to watch.

It's actually really neat that as soon as you start your car, the unit will default to the last screen you were on and the choices you made so any gauges you selected will automatically come up first thing.

Here's a photo from tonight. Don't worry, there was no traffic out when I took it and my eyes didn't leave the road to snap the photo. You'll notice the blue isn't spot on but it's close and even using the custom colors you can't really get any closer. I have the screen brightness set to low, because high seemed overly distracting. I'm still trying to decide if I actually want to raise it up any. I would need to find a way to raise it about 3/4 of an inch in order to see everything on the screen. That would take a lot of velcro though and I wonder if it would increase the distraction of it being there. Overall, though, it's kind of a neat tool, as long as it doesn't get ripped off from my car because disconnecting it all the time would be somewhat cumbersome.

Edit: It was indeed a trip only MPG Avg, so I set up an XGauge to show the Tank MPG Avg. I'm really digging this thing!

nice i might definitely get one now, one last question, can you really read/clear codes with it? and what kinds of codes can you read/clear?

Supposedly you can read/clear codes with it, though I cannot answer this question in depth because I've not used mine for that purpose yet. My vehicle is all stock so I haven't run into any check engine lights while changing things out or making adjustments. I think it will be useful for that in the future. Maybe the ScanGauge website (www.scangauge.com) can help you more with this question.
