Pick your poison. You SHOULD go with a new set of shocks just because yours are probably starting to wear. You posted in the MKV forum and you most likely are talking about a MKIV being a vr6 ;) I'll move it.

How much do you want to lower it? Remember if you get just new springs your struts are going to wear before. Ever think about looking into coilovers? There are a bunch of different brands at various prices.

i was looking at the same thing he was, but coilovers are alot more expensive than just getting lowering springs. unless you know of some for less than $1,000

You can find a few different sets for $500 and below. There are racelands, rokkors, FK streetlines, Vmaxx just to name a few.

how badly do coilovers/lowering springs affect the ride? i've heard that lowering it too much causes an entire fabrication overhaul.

does anybody know anything about that?

def dont need an overhaul lol. most everyone i know with a vw is on coils and in the dirt and no fab has been needed for any of us.

Racelands will drop her as low as she'd ever want to go.

On the Mk4, to go really low, you may end up losing the front sway bar. If you want to go super-duper-dumped-scrape-the-ground low, I've heard something about flipping the control arms over. But I'm guessing that's not in the cards lol.

so if i were to just put 1.5" lowering springs on my vr6, no fabrication would need to be done to make them fit?

No there shouldn't be any problems with that.

None what so ever, I'm dropped 1.5" on my VR6. It's sad really, my wheel gap is still too big :(

can you take a picture of your wheel gap? i'm curious to see how much space you still have.
