What did everyone eat? I am always curious about what a traditional holiday meal is in other parts of the world. In my (southern) house we had....
Smoked Duck, roast beef, sweet potatoes, roasted asparagus, mac and cheese, califlower au-grautain, yeast rolls, collard greens, mashed potatoes, Mince meat and rhubarb pie.

Mince pie goes well with a nice stout. I home brew (ALOT) this one was an oatmeal stout...yum. Working on a nut brown ale now. MMMMM

On Christmas Eve we had a pork roast as well as a beef tenderloin, au gratin potatoes, veggies, grandma's homemade rolls, and assorted cookies for dessert.

Today we had a ham with brown sugar glaze, fried potatoes, green beans almondine, rolls again (yum), and assorted finger foods at grandma's house with desserts including a white chocolate mousse pie with an oreo cookie crust, lined with milanos and topped with whipped cream, strawberries, and shaved chocolate, a gingerbread coffee cake that was nice and spicy, and cinnamon/sugar hungarian crescent butter cookies. :)

I'm allergic to chicken, like other people are to peanuts, no turkey either. So here it's always aged prime rib or a big roast ham. Today, with the ham, we had baked sweet potatoes with apple, garlic potatoes, brussel sprouts and various other foods. Desert included mince tarts with brandy butter. I'm stuffed!

My granparents (dads side)were italian immegrants. Her lasangna was pretty bad but the bergioli, gnocci, and the BREAD! more than over came that one fault. She also cured her own procciuto (SP?) made wine and grappa, hand rolled pasta, made goat cheese, and made this porchini mushroom gravy that was worth writing home about. When she was feeling froggy she used to make the bread in the odd looking iron pan in the fire place. It was the crusty-est, chewest goodness on earth. I remember that house so well. It always smelled of woodsmoke and yeast. Hard to belive she has been gone nearly 16 years. She was the first to go. Lucky me had all 4 untill I was 33 years old. We lost Nona Attilia days after my oldest son was born. We drove up to Va. from SC when he was six days old so she could hold him at least once. She died three days later. Nono Remo died two months later. Thank you for awakening their memory.
Amazingly I still have one left. She was with us today. Grandma Edna in 99, and sharp as ever. She still lives by her self, manages her own affairs, does her own shopping, and by god drives her own Caddilac! a 1995 STS with 53k miles. She made the mashed potatoes today and supervised my sons making the Mince pie. They are so sweet to her. It makes a poppa proud.

Christmas Eve we pretty puch have apitizers as there is so much going on we don't have time to sit down and have a meal. It is every person for themselves and there is too much food to list...

Christmas day we had Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, rolls, something with apple/nut/marshmellow stuff it in it... Basically thanksgiving all over again. Though usually we have ham.

New Years day we will have spare ribs and sauerkraut, yum!

Like DUSlider, we just go for finger food on Xmas eve. We have all the family here in the KC area over, exchange presents, and play card, or board games. Christmas day, we go to my nephews house, and hang with him and his family, Play more games, (Wii, etc) and enjoy a nice ham dinner, mased potatos, green beans, and whatever else anyone wants to make.

All in all, we try to keep the kitchen work as light as possible.

I cook a lot of weird stuff and I had to look that up. Sounds fantastic, I'll have to give it a try soon.

The kitchen work is my favorite part. I am not particularly religios and I don't care so much about trees and boxes and bows but i'll take any excuse to get the family over for a meal. I like a busy kitchen. Yesterday was great. While mom and mom-in-law argue over how to do the roast my sister just does it. It's in the oven by the time they settle it. She sees mom reach for a knob on the oven and gives her a swat with a wooden spoon. On the other end of the room my 2 boys are peeling potatoes for and and learning from my 99 year old grandma, who's mashed potatoes are a thing of legend. She taught them how to put a pie together after that. Every body is stirring and cuting salting and tasting something...It was fun.

x-mas eve - just my family and my parents at their house. We usually throw down. This year was(all 3 super large) lobster tails, fillet mignons and twice baked potatoes. I did all the shopping and all the cooking. Also a couple of nice bottles of vino.

x-mas day - at my sisters. Traditional thanksgiving fare. Turkey, ham, mashies, corn, green bean casserole, stuffing, gravy, dinner rolls, some jellos, sweet taters, relish trays and deviled eggs. I'm the wine guy of the family so I usually bring 5-8 bottles of wine but got volunteered this year to do the deviled eggs. Also a ton of desserts and pies, but I just go for cold ham and turkeyy for dessert.

Hmmmm I am old and I have forgotten much more than I still know but Rugalah is a twisty looking sweet goody right. Alos seems like I have only had this at the home of a childhood friend around their jewish holidays. Should we be wishing you a happy channukah?
